Expressive Charcoal Drawing with Tansy Lee Moir 7th & 8th June 2025
Expressive Charcoal Drawing with Tansy Lee Moir 7th & 8th June 2025
Charcoal is one of our most ancient and direct drawing mediums, naturally suited to dynamic, expressive techniques.
On this comprehensive two-day workshop with charcoal artist Tansy Lee Moir, you will work from natural objects, photo and video references to create a portfolio of drawings exploring the exciting properties of this magical material.
Over the course of the weekend you will:
Develop your own charcoal mark making vocabulary, using novel tools and techniques to manipulate this expressive medium.
Learn how to introduce a sense of gesture and motion into your drawings.
Explore ways of working with charcoal powder, learning how to ‘draw with light’ in a reductive drawing approach.
Understand how to control tonal values when working in monochrome and practise using edges and contrast to bring your charcoal drawings into focus.
Gain the confidence to expand your drawings in both scale and complexity.
No previous charcoal drawing experience is necessary for this workshop – you will be supported and challenged to progress from where you are.
All materials will be provided, along with a full list of what we use. If you wish to continue charcoal drawing at home, starter packs of the same materials will be available to buy direct from Tansy.
Edinburgh based artist Tansy Lee Moir has been perfecting her charcoal techniques for the last 15 years, focusing her drawing practice on capturing the movement and growth of old trees. She works full-time as an artist and educator, exhibiting and teaching across the UK.
