Willow back pack course with Rachel Evans 20th & 21st September 2025
Willow back pack course with Rachel Evans 20th & 21st September 2025
This two day course will guide you through making an oval shaped willow backpack for carrying around your foraging finds or for picnics.
We will make a base and stake up, using different weaves and colours to add texture to the sides of the basket. You will be using home grown, colourful willows from my willow bed and some Somerset willow.
Price includes canvas straps, refreshments and lunch in a local eatery. Suitable for weavers with a little experience.
Rachel runs her business, Wheatcroftwillow from her workshop in the heart of the Churnet Valley in the Staffordshire Moorlands. Drawing on years of training, Rachel makes a range of traditional British baskets from willow and split hazel as well as more creative, contemporary work.
Rachel also grows her own willow, about half of what she uses every year, using organic principles, providing habitat for insects and small mammals. Growing her own willow locally reduces her carbon footprint from shipping willow across the country. Rachel grows unusual varieties that add colour and interest to her work.
Rachel is fascinated with historical baskets and what they can teach us in our work today. Some of her work involves recreating historical baskets for museums and reenactors.
